Space-themed play ideas for kids

There has been a lot of discussion about the potential for humans to land on Mars in the near future. Some say we could be touching down on the fourth planet from the sun as early as 2033! There are already young people training in NASA’s space camps with hopes of becoming the first Martians. To celebrate the wonders of space, we’ve put together a guide for budding astronauts and space enthusiasts who want to plan their own Martian missions at home!

Plan a mission to Mars!

Step 1: Map out your journey with a 3D Solar System model…

If you’re heading to Mars anytime in the future, you’ll need a working knowledge of the planets in our Solar System. So, the first item on the mission agenda is an activity that will help kids map out their journey through the Milky Way. This engaging play idea is great opportunity for kids to learn how to differentiate between the planets, moons and stars.

Step 2: Build a DIY astronaut training centre…

All aspiring astronauts need training before they head to outer space! Trainee astronauts use simulators to prepare their minds and bodies for the things they will encounter when journeying through the cosmos. Our DIY spacecraft simulator is easy to make and will provide hours of creative fun for any budding space explorers out there!

Step 3: Design a LEGO space rover…

Next on the agenda is to build a space rover to take along with you for the ride! Brainstorm with the kids about the function of the rover. Will you be using it to collect rock samples? To take pictures? To monitor the weather? Get creative with your own designs, using either cardboard or any LEGO you may already have around the house. Step 4: Build a DIY model spacecraft…

It takes years to engineer the vehicles that take us into space. Another fun activity to get the imagination flowing is to build your own model rocket out of sustainable materials! You can make your own rocket ship using this easy-to-follow, step-by-step video tutorial!  Once you’ve completed your model rocket, don’t forget to head outdoors and test it!

Step 5: Visit the planetarium for a final briefing…

Once you’ve completed all of your crafts, spend a day learning from the experts at your local observatory. From planetarium shows to science sessions for kids, there’s a great array of options for all space enthusiasts.
